AMI Automation Launches Melt Shop Level 2 Upgrade Project with Nucor Steel Gallatin

AMI Automation and Nucor Steel Gallatin (NSGAL) have launched the Melt Shop Level 2 Upgrade project after a successful Kick-Off Meeting (KOM). The project modernizes the plant’s two production lines, AMI originally replaced Line A’s Level 2 system 16 years ago; now Line A will be migrated to AMI’s new platform and Line B’s original system will be replaced. Upon completion, a Coordination System, 3 Electric Arc Furnaces, 3 Ladle Metallurgical Furnaces and 2 Scrap Handling Systems will operate on new AMI’s unified Level 2 platform. Project completion will be mid-2027.

The upgrade consolidates scrap handling, primary and secondary steelmaking, and two scrap areas into a single coordinated system. Operators will gain centralized production scheduling, scrap and material tracking, real time heat monitoring, advanced reporting, and lifecycle tracking for critical equipment; improving efficiency, visibility and maintenance planning. The KOM aligned both teams on scope, technical requirements, communications, and a shared commitment to safety, quality and timely delivery.

This project highlights NSGAL’s investment in advanced manufacturing and AMI’s role as a trusted automation partner.
