AMI Automation and Optimus Steel achieve significant reduction in Graphite Electrode consumption with IoTrode®

AMI achieved a notable operational improvement in collaboration with Optimus Steel, a U.S. producer of high-quality wire rods, billets, and coiled rebar. After implementing IoTrode®, our advanced AI-driven solution for electrode monitoring and oxidation control, Optimus Steel achieved a total of 14% reduction in graphite electrode consumption in its EAF operations after two years of operation (11% on first year).
IoTrode® provides real-time visibility of electrode consumption through artificial intelligence and oxidation-classification technology. The system monitors and quantifies electrode performance, enabling dynamic cooling control based on real-time oxidation feedback. This helps steel producers optimize consumption, reduce variability between crews, detect electrode quality issues, and benchmark performance across suppliers.
As Gary Cvitkovich, Superintendent at Optimus Steel, shared: “AMI has always been a reliable long-term partner. They were one of the components that allowed the new team we put together last year to produce the most tons Optimus Steel has ever done!”
“We are proud of the measurable results achieved together with Optimus Steel,” said Carlos de los Santos, AMI Automation. “This accomplishment is not a paradox; it reflects our commitment to partnering with customers to advance efficiency and sustainability through digital innovation.”
Optimus Steel operates with a strong focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement, supplying key steel products to construction, manufacturing, and industrial markets across the United States. AMI continues to develop digital tools like IoTrode® that support steelmakers in achieving greater process transparency, lower operational costs, and more sustainable production.
