AMI Automation Upgrades SVC System for SSAB Iowa’s DC EAF

AMI Automation has successfully upgraded the 180MVAr Static VAR Compensator (SVC) system at SSAB Iowa, enhancing the performance of its DC Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and ensuring improved grid stability. This modernization aligns with AMI Automation’s commitment to delivering high-performance power solutions for the steel industry.

The project included a comprehensive upgrade of the control system, protection panel, and firing circuit of the Thyristor Controlled Reactor (TCR). These enhancements ensure compliance with stringent power quality regulations by mitigating voltage fluctuations and stabilizing the power factor.

A key challenge of the project was achieving precise control of the thyristor valve firing. This required advanced real-time data acquisition and processing from power equipment and measuring instruments, allowing for accurate and dynamic system response.

By implementing this upgrade, AMI Automation reinforces its position as a leader in electrical power solutions, providing cutting-edge technology that enhances reliability, efficiency, and sustainability in Steel manufacturing.
